Gunjan Sarmah is a 14 year old Girl from Assam who helped to rescue the lives of 10 other kids, by offering herself to be kidnapped.
The Incident took place December 4, 2013 at Simaluguri in Sibsagar district of Assam. An Unidentified Gunman had kidnapped a School Van carrying 11 Kids.
However, the driver displayed immobilized the van by driving it into a drain in the Chantak tea estate. Angered by this, the kidnapper threatened all the kids to follow him and picked up one Girl.
At this time the 14 year old Gunjan (she was returning from school), volunteered to be kidnapped in return for safety and rescue of 11 kids. The Kidnapper agreed to her demands and freed the 11 kids.
According to her, the kidnapper clutched her hand and eloped into dense forests. They crossed the river and stopped at one place at night. She did not eat anything whole night. When she woke up in the morning, she could not find her kidnapper.
She wandered through the dense forest along Assam-Nagaland border and reached the house of a Tea garden worker who called the police.
Police found her nearly 14 hours after abduction, but she was calm and displayed a great degree of maturity. Daughter of a small trader, Gunjan even addressed the kidnapper as ‘Uncle’.
Impressed by her Bravery, Assam Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for her, besides getting her nominated for National Bravery Awards. Additionally, Assam HRD Ministry has announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for her and Rs 10,000 for the driver, who played the trick against the plans of kidnapper.
